We have bicycled with children on 2 seat tandems with child stoker kits also known as kid back conversions or sto-kid (stokid) kits and also with crankarm shortners. The crank arm shortners permit a lower saddle height. Crank shortners are a wonderful invention. There are various types of crankarm shorteners available. Sometimes extra wide crank arm shorteners are needed for a particular adult crank on the back of a tandem bike. And crank shorteners permit a range of pedal circles as the legs of children that ride tandems grow. Biking with children is possible with the various child adapter kits located in our Tandem Accessory Catalog or Tandem Accessories Catalog which is available on-line catalog. Kids on the back of tandems are sometimes called stokids. Sto-kids is a very appropriate term coming from the word stoker. We have cycled with children and cycled with youths on 3 seat bikes also known as triples, triplets or a 3 seat tandem.. Some of these long bikes have been a convertible design or a convertible triple or convertible triplet. These triplet tandem bike frames come apart with S&S couplers and convert from a 2 seat tandem and back to a 3 seat tandem in minutes. Biking with children is good exercise for adults and a great way to bike to fitness while participating in a quality time activity while your kid bikes to fitness. A bike for two, a bike for three, a bike for four, a bike for five, or even a bike for six (bike for 3, bike for 4, bike for 5, or a bike for 6) can permit the entire family to participate together and develop a team work approach to things, set common goals and experience feelings of mutual accomplishment. Tandems are familiar to many from the song Daisy Daisy and other novelty appearances over the years. Only in recent decades have they been offered as safe, light, fun, and go fast tandems! Model names are always interesting too such as dragonfly sometimes spelled Dragon Fly, Calfee tetra, Calfee tetra Tetra, all from Calfee Designs. Santana offers the Santana Sovereign, their aluminum tandem, the Noventa, the Arriva, and the Arriva SE. Additional offerings from Santana Cycles include the Fusion, Cilantro, Encore, Picante, Team Scandium, TEam Niobium, Team Titanium, Team Ti, Ti-700, Ti-26, Beyond with isogrid tubing, Extreme, Cabrio, Triplet, Quad, Quint, and Hex models. All models are available in the Stowaway configuration that uses S&S couplers or S+S couplers which permit the tandem to travel making it a travel tandem or a take-apart tandem that will fit in a suitcase, called the Airline SafeCase or Airline Safe Case. Co-Motion on the other hand offers these tandem bike models: Periscope Scout, Periscope Trident Triple, Periscope Trident Convertible, Primera, Primera Co-pilot, Periscope Torpedo, Perscope Hammerhead, Mocha, Speedster, Roadster, Troadster Triple, Supremo, Robusta and the Macchiato, a custom lightweight speed racer demon! Many options are available including Avid disc brakes, Winzip disc brakes, which are tandem disc brakes. Tandem disk brakes remove wear from the rim, work in the wet, keep heat off of the rim, and add safety without adding too much weight. Arai drum brakes are also tandem hub brakes, given it is a thread on drum or a tandem drum brake. Tandem forks or tandem carbon forks save a great deal of weight. Tandem carbon fiber forks are also offered for tandem disc brakes. Tandem suspension seatposts add a degree of comfort by taking the edge off of inadvertent bumps and jolts that tandem stokers do not see coming.

Tandems are common place now that they are designed to actually be ridden these days, and one can ride a tandem bike safely, or race a tandem too. Some companies offer tandem race bikes. The much longer tandems are called tandem quads and tandem quints by some while others refer to them as 4 seaters, 5 seaters and spelling varies greatly too with four seater or five seater often noted.
