LEARNING TO RIDE & JUST TURNED 4!
I've had a great deal of fun teaching many kids to ride over more years than I care to mention and without the use of trainy wheels.
It didn't take long to realize that newbies with a history of trainy wheel use took maybe 3 times longer to grasp their balance as compared to those who never used them. Have you ever seen a kid fall from a trainy wheel equipped bike when cornering? The tricycle effect comes into play where there is an outward lean on a turn which actually lifts the rider higher in the air before dumping them to the pavement. Ouch.
No doubt there's a rider or two somewhere that gives some credit to trainy wheels but I've never seen one. I personally learned without them as did my kids, cousins, neighbors and friends from childhood.
Trainy wheels train the rider to be reliant on a type of crutch. One will frequently observe the rider leaning the wrong direction during a turn and once the neurology has been incorrectly and instinctively trained, a deep seated reflexive habit must then be unlearned. The process of getting rid of this habit takes time and lots of it, at least that's my explanation.
Kids can learn to ride incredibly quickly and sometimes instantly if balance instincts have been developed from other 2 wheel toy devices. Razor type scooters or walking bicycles around without pedals quickly develop the needed balance skills and cornering techniques.
Our youngest literally took off and rode instantly by herself and remained crash free day after day for an entire week shortly after turning 4. All was good until an adult.. gasp.. messed her up by instructing her to do something but for some reason did not have the foresight to teach her how to do it first. Duh. She got the 'bewary of adults lecture'...again. That first crash was mentally tragic for a bit as it took 2 or 3 days to get her back on the bike being scared and having her confidence badly shaken.
4 YEARS OLD AND ZERO CRASHES DURING THE 1ST FULL WEEK!
HELMET, GLOVES, ELBOW AND KNEE PADS WERE ALL USED, JUST IN CASE.
