A statement from Rolf Detrich with regard to team weight and their Rolf Prima Vigor tandem wheels posted by Dwan Shepard on T@H November 8, 2005.

Hello,

Rolf Dietrich asked me about posting a sugegsted weight limit for the Vigor
Tandem Wheelset just before Interbike. Rolf Prima was introducing a new
wheelset for single bikes at the time, and they wanted to provide guidelines
for people shopping for any set of Rolf Prima wheels. It made sense to Rolf,
Brian, Blair and TJ to post a suggested limit for all sets, but they also
make the statement noted by Mark Livingood below. What Rolf wants to do is
try to get people to consider whether a superlight wheelset is the best
choice for them if their combined weight is over 380 lbs.

FYI, Rolf and I are big guys and we've done quite a bit of tandem riding
together to test and develop each other's products. I alerted Rolf to the
current thread here on T@H, and he made these comments:

"Thanks for the heads up.  We started the max. rider wt. recommendations
because of the Vigor SL (single) wheel we introduced this year.  This wheel
is made for lighter riders and we needed to get that word out.  Maybe we
went a bit overboard with the inclusion of the tandem wheels.

"You and I were certainly over the recommended 380 lbs when we did the
tandem stage race this summer and I would put or combined weights at around
440 lbs and the wheels felt fine. It’s a given that higher loads wears out
ALL stuff faster but I think that the load safety margins on our tandem
wheels are bigger than the margins on any of our wheels and I have no
concerns for teams at our weights!"

Best regards,

Dwan Shepard
